Change begins when you do something different than what you have been doing. Once you start solidly on that path, things begin to fall into place because you start to associate with the people that are ready to support you.
It’s funny what gets you started on a path—a whim from a stumbled-on book, maybe? I wanted a big life change. The timing was finally right, but I didn’t know what that change would look like or how to make it happen.
On my birthday several years ago, I took a day off my consulting work and drove to my favorite place – Monterey, California. I had lunch by myself, put my feet up in the sun and drank a couple of mimosas. An old used book store called to me from across the street.
I crossed the street and ran my fingers on the dust-mite ridden books. My nose was already stuffing up. Then, I stumbled into—literally tripped over a book lying on the floor called Glamping by Mary Jane Butters. It was a hard bound book full of color and smiling faces and pictures of old tiny trailers that had been re-purposed into pink polka-dot shabby-chic lady caves. Although I have never been the shabby-chic or pink-polka-dot type, I was fascinated by the idea of making a major life change. I was ready. So, a year later, I bought a small trailer and towed that 15 foot fully-loaded tiny home all over the west. Alone. I put a name on the side: LiveLaughRoll.com in hopes it would be a conversation starter with strangers (I’m an introvert with social anxiety, so I had to), and it was. I met fascinating people everywhere. I volunteered and hiked and spent most evenings writing and in quiet contemplation about what my future was to look like.
That book was the discovery—I wanted to live a more authentic life. That discovery gave birth to an idea and that idea created another and then a path opened up and I was suddenly talking to people about things that had been on my mind for 20+ years.
I just began by taking the steps to make the first idea a reality. From there, it was just a matter of paying attention.
Pursuing any kind of major life change requires self-awareness and confidence and that’s why I started Vida Real Center. It is here to help facilitate your transformation—whatever that might be—however big or seemingly small. How?
